Roughly 50 cars have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.

Officers report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.

The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.

Law enforcement then located many other marked cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Police state initial examinations suggest the fluid was most likely human blood.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; officials are not yet aware of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were working "to solve the incident" and have asked to the community for tips.

A high-ranking political figure commented the attack made him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This act hits the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right attack five years ago," he stated on online, referring to the killing of nine victims by a assailant targeting residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
