The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation around the recent awards show was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
